Auto high beams not working right

Tonight on my way home I found a recurring problem, that my auto high beams having been going on. I drove a couple of miles on dark country roads with no streetlights or reflective signs and though the left stalk was pushed forward, the auto high beams just weren't happening.

Wondering if anyone has had this issue. And yes, my windshield is clean.

I have that problem too.

Think it has to do with reflections from the road markings/strips...and the system being hyperactive.

Generally I hold the lever for a quarter second or longer and the lights will come on, but just flicking them on does nothing. It's like you have to let the system know you REALLY want the high beams...

....we'll call this one a quirk..??

Hopefully holding the lever works for you.

Just as a baseline, I’ve never had an issue with my high beams.. they always come on immediately and react well to oncoming traffic or traffic ahead of me. They even do pretty well with highly reflective street signs (they stay on).

Where are you driving?

Most of the time mine are fine..but no street lights, not a lot of stars..new moon...no houses or other light sources...

That is when it seems to be over sensitive to reflector strips or whatever and needs some urging to change.

..could need to be recalbrated or something...has no one else noticed this issue?

As I said in my original post, I'm driving in the country on roads that have no (or few) side reflectors or reflector strips, so I'm bewildered as to why they stopped working several days ago.

I have times they didn't want to come on driving off-road at night..no reflactors, nothing. Thought it was because the sand reflected back too much light...

Talked to my neighbor who has a Discovery and he has the same issue, so thought it was a how-the-thing-works thing...

Could be I'm wrong and there is an issue with the sensors/programming...

Or your issue could be different too...

Have you tried holding the handle in the on position for a moment before letting go?

Maybe you're driving too slowly!
They only come on automatically over 35-40 mph or something like that.

If it helps maybe navigation thinks that car is in populated areas... also there is link with speed You need to go faster than 60kmh... then if speed falls below 25kmh high beam is turned off...
This is from manual... maybe I didnt interpret it correctly,
but it is not based just on external light sensing

I’m pretty sure mine are independent of speed but id have to verify. Maybe you’re confusing that with the feature that turns the headlights when Cornering? I know that’s only effective above ~40mph

I have similar issues. But I also don't understand the blue "auto" light indicator vs the white "auto" light indicator. And the owner's manual doesn't explain. Does anyone know?
