Brakes stuck in service mode!

2045 Views 34 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  Pointman0853
Hi all, I have what seems to be a recurring same problem with other members, I had the warning light to check the parking brake so thought if I cycled the brake service system that the fault would clear... you guessed it! I now cant get the parking brake to come out of service mode. The brakes work fine apart from unable to get the parking brake to operate!

Thanks Lex, I spoke to them yesterday. As my car is outside of the warranty, they were unable to help. It appears that I am left on my own to solve this mystery. Sadly, my nearest dealer is 8 hours away in Las Vegas...
Are you handy with tools? There is a video on you tube as to how to take the parking brakes off. Actually that video was how to replace pads and rotors (I think) but this guy took off the ebrakes. find it and do the same if disconnecting the battery then connecting does not work.
Alfie,
I am very handy with tools. (I also own a Defender 90 Tdi, LOL).
I purchased the SGW bypass device from Alfissimo, so I can connect the ECM software and hopefully clear the code causing this issue. I've done the on-off routene several times, but the problem persists. As a disclaimer, yes, I have read and viewed everything available on the Web on how to fix this. On top of this, my SGW does not appear to be where they claim is it supposed to be. I even have one document, from FCA, telling me it was behind the glove box!. Not wanting to bleed out by blindly fumbling around above the steering column, I have ordered an endo scope to solve that issue. I would think a 'last resort' would be to remove the actuators. When these cars go out of warranty, the fun definitely begins!

so the parking brakes are not actually stuck but just the warning light? have you done the poxy alignment with MES? or clear the errors with MES? I think one of the cables, gray one with MES should be able to clear up ABS and other brake errors. A few people have done this. I thought your brakes were actually stuck and the car was immobile. Limp mode is expected and this gray cable with MES should clear up the error.
@Pointman0853 you may not even have SGW. try the MES without the bypass installation and see if it works. I have a 2018 and mine is not equipped with SGW. Simple test is to do the service interval change. If you can, chances are you don't have a SGW to bypass

Alfie,

Thanks for the comment. To be clear, I have a warning on the dash and the parking brakes are stuck 'on', I.E.: The car is dragging its ass-end if I put it in drive or reverse.

Alfie,
I have considered this. Now that I have removed considerable pretty 'tupperware', including the instrument cluster, LOL.
Amazon just came to the rescue and delivered my inexpensive endoscope, so now I will probe under the dash and confirm the presence of an SGW, then proceed accordingly.
I would love to know the last 8 of your VIN and see if ours have close birthdays.. I appreciate your input, greatly!

Manufacture date is in the driver side door jam. I think mine was november 2017? Think that's was the time when they started to hardwire apple carplay lines... unfortunately, mine didn't get it.
my vin is 7c, (has carplay) and was built in Aug 2018, and has the SGW

okay then just plug in the MES and see if you can change the service interval.
@Pointman0853, although you will need the MES to reset the parking brake error, I think you need to replace the motor on the parking brake. Chances are, it's the failure of the electric motor that's probably causing all this. Since the car can be moved, it will probably be a struggle but you should be able to take the parking brake off.

Well, the adventure continues..
After getting the interior put right, I attempted to connect my ELM327 and use multiecuscan to connect and clear the faults.
Then I got this error message. Either my ELM device is not good for this application. or I do have an SGW still hidden somewhere... Here is the ELM unit.

Getting somewhat frustrated, I have now jacked up both rear wheels and found the driver side parking brake locked on. I will now remove the motor from that side, and see if I can find a replacement.

That unit should work. You're connecting to the ABS module yes? Are you using the grey adapter?

You want modified elm with adapters....

This was the missing link. I had read something about needing an adaptor (grey) for the Stelvio. Thanks for the link.
