Any idea when they will start hitting the lot? Is there any change or update worth waiting for?

Minor cosmetic updates and a touchscreen are the big changes. I believe the kick sensor for the tailgate will finally be available.

Yep. Touchscreen so all the whingers can be appeased and then set their seats up incorrectly for driving so they can reach their precious screen.

Did they say something about it officially?
Not officially, however it’s a credible source from a dealership. Grain of salt and all that.

As much as I like tech (HUD would be cool) I really don't like touch screen. Much more difficult to use while driving.

Hybrid would be ideal state. I like the touchscreen before starting to drive to get things set up quickly. But in motion our setup is perfect with the dial. It has positive stops so muscle memory takes over and I can navigate Android Auto with just brief glances at the screen to see my starting point. 1 click down, 3 clicks left, push down to select can be done without taking my eyes off the road or having to reach out.

Like to point put that is an austrailian mag I think, definitely not US. The US doesnt have fog lights. So not all the info is correct probably.

IMO...if the LED headlights are true, glad I have the one I do.
I agree. My vehicles have had Xenon HID's for many years. I have had rental cars with LED headlights and the difference is very noticeable. LED's are an improvement over halogen, but seem like a step down from Xenon. I'm assuming there is a cost benefit to the manufacturers to use LED since power requirements are less and there is no need for a voltage step-up transformer to power the Xenon bulbs. I was happily surprised that Alfa kept the Xenon's while most others have changed.

LED and xenon are pretty similar, with LED having a wider dispersion pattern, so it throws the light out wider. However xenon has the advantage of being more penetrating. This means it can shine a further distance with the same amount of power. Makes it far better for high beams and is a big difference for people like me who live rural and use their high beams all the time.

However LEDs have several advantages for the manufacturer. Being a more common technology used in a lot of areas from touchscreens to cannabis growing, LED lights are much cheaper to manufacture. The same amount of inventory takes up less physical space due to being smaller, and the lack of needing a transformer helps with assembly costs also. BUT, LED lights run hotter...a lot hotter and heat is already a problem that is being ignored, so why no just keep doing it? LEDs are also a lot more fragile. Yes, I know they last forever supposedly.


That is in a lab.


In the real world there are two years old cars with LEDs that need new headlights, Bi-xenons, I have a first gen Audi TT still using the same bulbs...the real world use is that xenon outlast LED ten to one and that is cutting into repair profits. Changing out a light bulb is a very easy, high profit add-on job that luxury dealers have lost, but with LEDs they are getting it back...with a higher profit margin!!! YAY!!!

Fact is LED rely on being soldered to a circuit board to function. It is cheap and amazingly easy to manufacture however all those solders are a major weak point. Vibration is the enemy of LED light bulbs. Cars vibrate ALOT. 100% of the time they are running, they are vibrating. Causes failure with individuals bulbs, now since each light "bulb" is actually a circuit board with a bunch of individual LEDs wired to it, designed to function as one lamp so when just one of the 50 lights goes out it isn't a big deal - according to the LED manufacturers, it is a feature - the rest keep working, however it does make the light dimmer and the more that go out the worse it is. In the meanwhile as long as it isn't a majority of the bulbs, the manufacturer gets to look at you and laugh cause they aren't going to fix anything, to them nothing is wrong.

I type this looking at a 30inch widescreen ultra-sharp curved LED monitor, the highest resolution Dell computer sells. Cost over $1000. It has a cluster of dead pixels in the upper left corner, been dead for a year, monitor is 1 1/2 years old...want to guess what Dell did when I called to complain? Nothing, their warranty only covers pixels that turn on permanently causing bright spots. The warranty does not cover "dead" pixels that won't turn on. Always a loophole to the marketing jargon...always.

Bi-xenons are proven tech, LEDs are just a way for a manufacturer to save money while being able to feed the consumer a bunch of great marketing jargon that is only true in controlled situations...not the real world.


Now, I could believe that Alfa is going to LED not to save money, but to "keep up with the Jones's". The average consumer, newer = better, and there have been billions of dollars funneled into convincing people LEDs are the best thing since the light bulb was invented so there are ALOT of people who think LED...are the best thing since the light bulb was invented... Easier for Alfa to join the pack than fight it. Still I prefer xenon headlights. No argument in terms of LED being better than halogen though.


Please understand I am not talking out of my butt with this marketing stuff, plenty of phycology studies out there showing how for most people, on most subjects - especially ones the listener does not have a lot of personal experience with or knowledge of - someone hears something 3 times, they will accept it as fact. Marketers know this...it is why advertising exists. In a marketing class in college we were taught about toilet paper...blew my mind.

Toilet paper created the template for marketing as we know it today almost a century ago. Invented in the late 1800's it didn't become popular until the 1930's. It didn't become popular because people became convinced of the benefits...it became popular because Charmin started putting pictures of pretty ladies on the package which allowed them to run bigger ads in more prominent publications. Prior to this it was marketed as a medical device to help keep you from getting sick. Charmin advertised it as a way to keep yourself fresh and pretty. More advertising, using simplified arguments made by pretty people resulted in more sales and the product took off. No joke, no one would buy it for almost 50 years. The Scott brothers (Scott toilet paper) put toilet paper on a roll in the 1890's - before this it was a pile of tissues - but didn't take credit for it till the 1900's, because they were embarrassed by their own creation. Advertisers had Doctors talk about all the health benefits of toilet paper, no one bought it. Toilet paper was something no one talked about and were ashamed to use. Then pretty ladies got put on the package and full page magazine ads were run with even bigger pictures of pretty ladies, who said nothing more than you should buy this cause it's good, and within 10 years it was a staple in every American household, had it's own aisle prominently displayed in the grocery store and was gaining popularity in Europe. It isn't what you sell, it isn't what you say, it isn't how good your product is....it's how good you look while saying the same very simple thing over and over till people believe you. Marketing science since 1930. (please don't misunderstand...toilet paper is important and I'm glad it became accepted and not just a something for weird people. People can be gross, marketing to create popularity was a good thing in this case. Still kind of disgusts me how all this stuff works, and THAT is works - so consistently for generations - just sad IMO.)

I am glad for Alfa Romeo that they are offering the touchscreen on the 2020s since that seems to be what most people expect but once I got used to the system the Stelvio currently has I much prefer it. So much easier and definitely safer. Easy to browse channels if I want to but in reality I only listen to about 4 different changes for the most part.

Get rid of something that works nicely in the driving environment and replace it with something nice in a coffee shop etc.

At one time there was talk of the top surface of the control wheel being a touch pad. I wonder if that is what they plan to implement.

before my2020... Here is an update with some good and bad details for european my2019 for different topics that I noticed at forum discussions.

I am new owner and in general I am satisfied with Stelvio

software version 085....
-easy entry can be turned off
-blind spot can be audio and visual
-parking sensors do not work in park
-rear view camera has bigger image (full height of physical screen is occupied)
-android auto works well
-infotainment reaction time on user commands is fast
-there are a lot of radio preset slots
-next/prev track button can be programmed
-there is an automatic openning of cargo door by kicking under the rear bumper
-heating of rear seats
-comfortable luxury seats
-great new soundproof front side glasses
-there is no panic button on remote
-pleased with adaptive dampers
-great brown interior and leather wrapped dash
-seat memory remembers side mirror positions...so you can set one for backward tight maneuvering


now the bad things:
-rear camera resolution, especially bad pic at low light
-imprecise parking sensors
-rear wiper interval and speed, real disaster, also front wipers in auto mode not so good
-bad design of windshield water flow at high speeds
-dna resets to N with each start
-cannot set dampers to stiffer setting in N and A
-child lock does not lock rear doors, just windows
-slow heating of seats
-AC in auto needs frequent work with temp knobs
-middle rear headrest is not height adjustable
- panorama shade must be open when roof glass is in vent position
-adaptive cc not so smart... on highway slows down to harsh with max distance setting, when driving in left lane and reaching bus or van in right lane acc often slows down and after few secs accelerate again (lane lines are visible)

That is not a feature..that is a problem to get fixed. Not supossed to do that.

And you child door locks only lock the window? Are you using the button by the window switches? Those only lock the windows. The child safety locks for the doors are a switch by the actual latch mechanism on the door jamb...

the DNA is a new "feature", maybe a semi-requirement for euro emissions? I really doubt they wanted to do it, or think it's a good idea, but you sure don't want to be accused of cheating ...

1. Dna resets to N; that is intentional change on my2019, at least on european models. probably they have done that because of emissions... 😞
2. I know that there is latch on rear doors to lock them from inside... but it is pity that button for locking windows do not lock/unlock rear doors also... volvo has this feature at least 10 years... and it is very practical when you have kids

The emission stuff is ridiculous. At this point more benifits would come from cleaning up the power grids and getting off coal/natural gas (natural gas is clean only when compared to coal and gasoline, still causes CO2 emissions and the mining/transportion causes spikes in methane emissions). Making all cars electric can only do so much if the electricity is dirty too...

..it is if it's from coal or natural gas and you count the mining to get it (which you should).

I agree with you on the Volvo feature, but as far as I know it is only Volvo...

Kinda like the flip down center sunvisor in VW's...mostly unique to that brand and pretty sweet.

I've always wondered what kind of MPG improvements we could see if the Feds made localities install timing mechanisms / AI on traffic signals to reduce stop n go instead of forcing Auto manufacturers to reach some unrealistic goal.

I used to drive a well traveled stretch of road through town about 6miles twice a night around 9pm. Not another car on the road, and yet I could easily hit 10/15 red lights with absolutely no cross traffic. Instead of mandating the rediculous start/stop feature, How about eliminating the stop.

You nailed it.

Simple and compared to the expenses of new regulations, technology and infrastructure amazingly cheap.

BUT it would require city councils hiring new engineers and performing traffic studies....so no one does it.

Instead we are regulating the auto industry literally to death, while inconveniencing millions of people and creating traffic problems everyday...cause....reasons...
