Trump Targets Foreign Auto Makers for Not Building Enough in U.S.
In meeting with industry officials, president proposes 20% tariff and tougher emission rules on vehicle imports

https://www.wsj.com/articles/auto-makers-meet-with-donald-trump-on-emissions-nafta-1526063070
(Probs behind WSJ paywall)

At the beginning of the meeting, the president urged the companies to build more cars in the U.S., saying they should “build them here and ship them overseas.” He singled out Sergio Marchionne, the chairman and CEO of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV, for praise and lauded the company’s plans to move a facility to Michigan from Mexico.

Trump has no right to dictate where companies do business (not free trade) or threaten them with tariffs (which raise prices for US consumers) anymore than any other president had a right to dictate to Trump where to do business, which they didn't. Not to mention Trump's hypocrisy of making all of his products overseas, including Invanka's product lines.

I don't get too concerned about what trump says - there's a direct connection between what pops into his head and pops out of his mouth.
by the time he actually does something it's gone through all the filters.

Trying not to be too political here: I am enjoying the disruption and progress in many areas and the exploding heads who can't deal with audacious truths drunk with virtuous self-worship and having abused their power in selfish ambition. And I abhor the agenda of the media.

Good to see Sergio get some good press vs the villianization of all things business and the blind, naive push to socialist ideals in our culture. Economics 101 should be a requirement for all majors.

I think we can all agree, that all of us hope that Alfa Romeo flourishes in the US.

Unbelievable cars. It's a great opportunity for newbies who've never heard of the brand after being absent in the US car market for so long.

Let's just hope that cooler heads prevail in Washington political circles. Not only will the dealers and employees suffer by imposing a tariff, but the consumer who will be forced to look at the dismal domestic lineup. Ugh

"like this was helpful"

like, the thread was about what he said - he says a lot off the cuff, thoughts, whatever.
doesn't make it policy.

I would say that your comment was not only not helpful, but quite irrelevant, and you probably put as much thought into posting it as you did when you came up with your $500 -!000/hour comment.
whatever pops into your head at the time.

FCA and the Europeans are not the offenders- most of the ire about unfair and uneven trade barriers, theft of intellectual property, and uneven parity is rightfully directed to our Chinese friends. It is good to call them out and acknowledge the harm that has been done to America's right to compete. The assumption, based on tacit weak enabling, is that the US and allies are this bottomless pit of untapped assets free for the picking for the beleaguered Chinese. Change is always painful. Good that finally someone has the nads to call it what it is.

And I love that our Japanese friends have found their own vast resource of coveted heavy metals!

Lost, seems you don't like me. Yea, that was off the cuff , not worth much more.

Scale is spot on. Way too many years by both parties allowed our positions to be erroded in the world economy. Was that constructive enough for you lost? A neutered politically correct thought is what got us in this mess. He says what many of us have thought or felt, unfiltered. Not always pretty, but definitely shaking up the establishment.

Yea, I'm getting sick of pop shots all day long from the upset left. I hated what happened in out country from 2009-2016 but didn't do more than buckle down and control my destiny irregardless of bad leadership. I just ignored him.

BTW, Dart is dead but maybe with full intent of building Guiletta on our shores?????

Feeding off this ^ , I think it's important to go back and consider why did Sergio jump at Chrysler ?
Was this a marraige of love or mutual need....clearly the second...If we go back in time to where both companies stood at the time, VW was buying every car manufacturer under the sun (made a strong push for Alfa which was extremely irrelevant at the time) and Sergio was trying to figure out how to re-establish Maserati in these shores...Alfa's reinvention was not even on the plate at that time....Car manufacturers were in deep $hit...Obama had no idea how to manage this crisis except to supply government funding to to the Big Three...Ford said NO (didn't need it...instead they dumped Volvo, Jag, Land Rover) but GM and Chrysler needed help.....Sergio knew that he needed brick and mortar in the US to sell Italian cars and to build them here (Euro / Dollar relationship dictates that)....

So...fast forward and Chrysler was ripe for the taking !! Sergio had just punished GM with a technology deal GM made with FIAT and so he had some cash....Chrysler was cheap and available so now, even if Donald decides to tariff foreign cars, Sergio can probably find a way to build them here...maybe not all, but maybe enough to make the marque not so foreign...

And with Alfa under FCA's Corporate umbrella, there are probably enough FCA products manufactured here that Alfa would probably not be subject to tariffs as its parent company does indeed produce enough cars in the US....Yes ?

I'm hoping that will be the case. Right now the best-selling FCA cars manufactured in the USA are the Jeeps. We need to keep our fingers crossed that oil prices don't rise any higher than the current $70/bbl for WTI.

with the increased rhetoric towards Iran, continued instability in the rest of the region, and trump being played by netanyahu, at least in the short time oil is going to continue to spike up.

Middle East has been simmering for some long. Time for a different tack and a little proactive diplomacy and assertion. Kerry should be shot. Stability is a worthy goal not a passive (or worse undercover) act.

"Chrysler was cheap" more like a give away.

"Middle East has been simmering" probably as long as it's been called that, and not likely to change (completely) anytime soon.

but to not lose focus, this was about what trump said.
he said some stuff about N. Korea a few months ago that had a lot of people upset - and now we have "detainees" returned and the possibility of a much improved situation there.

He recognizes broad issues, some of which have been ignored or allowed to become status quo, throws out a lot of thoughts, gets a discussion going, and for the most part the end results after much banter have been positive.

this morning he's working with China to help a big tech company that his Chinese sanctions hurt ... he wants to upset the apple cart but apparently not dump it.

visconti, I'll call out stuff whether I "like' the poster or not (as if I actually know anyone here. Alfaholico and I are in agreement on a lot of stuff - but that doesn't mean he gets a pass if he posts something off the wall.
I expect the same regarding my posts, but I NEVER EVER say stupid stuff

We agree lost and you just said some great stuff in that post. DT is using some classic business tacts by throwing a grenade in the fire, stirring up interest for and against , getting attention for the issue, then proceeding to negotiate. If he can pull off NK he may win the Nobel Peace Prize.
My typing tends towards sarcasm up front then dials back in as needed as well but I am COMPLETELY UNELECTABLE!! I did stuff in college.....hehe and photos do exist!!

Trump is either brilliantly making all of them wobble or he's a dumba$$ who doesn't follow the expert advice of his team. I'm betting on the former.

We're all armchair quarterbacks but you can't argue with success. Rodman diplomacy rules!
