Bringing this thread back to life. I left my gas cap off and got the emission evap. error code, and lost my stop/start function. Put the cap back on, but I am unable to clear the error code. I tried 3 different code readers I have, and none of them will reset the engine error code.
(2 stand alone code readers, and via my phone using an ELM327 blue-tooth dongle, (Tried resetting the code with 3 different softwares.) What am I missing? Why wont the car let me reset the error code?
Had a similar issue last week... I left gas cap off after a fill-up and the check engine light came --- which disabled the auto stop/start, remote start and DNA functions... As the code did not self-clear promptly after I put the cap on (as was my experience with previous cars) I tried to bring it into Alfa but it was 3-week wait for service! ... ... ... However, after a few days of driving (I have a very short commute) the code cleared itself one morning and everything is operational again.

A friend advised that after the issue was fixed (i.e. gas cap closed properly) that the car may have needed to be driven a certain amount of miles (perhaps 50) before the code cleared... In any event, just wanted to let people know that this issue did eventually resolve itself.

Wife took the car to a local shop and asked them to see if they could clear the code. Their OBD2 device cleared the code. I suppose I will have to purchase yet another code reader and reset unit.

Another funny thing that recently happened. My wife came inside and told me the car engine keeps stopping. Went out to the car to investigate. Engine started, but when she clicked it into drive, the car engine would die. I looked at her and said, try putting on your seat belt. She put on the belt, started the car, an off she went. Told a friend the story, he said on their new car they went to a wrecking yard and purchased a seat belt end, that they can plug into the female side, when he wants to test drive without wearing the seat belt.

Codes normally will not clear until the system gets into a "ready" state with most OBD2 cars. Usually 30-50 miles of driving will clear a code. It's designed I'm guessing so that you can't just clear the code right before an inspection to pass with faulty emissions happening.

2020 Ti Sport here in Michigan.
Had my oil changed at dealer on Saturday. Noticed on Monday car didn’t start with remote - went to start and ran a bit rough for about a minute then smoothed out. No codes or anything.
Fast forward to today (Thursday) same thing - no remote start, ran rough for a minute, then auto start stop disabled and check engine light on.
Going to stop at AutoZone to see what the codes say, but has anyone experienced this before?
*update - drive into work was fine. Car ran beautifully smooth as it normally does, just no DNA

looks like you have a newer car..... Cars 2018 onwards have a security gateway (SGW) that blocks write operations (this includes resets) via the OBD port.
The only solution for this is to install a SGW bypass module....

Re error resets, sometimes for non-persistant errors it's enough to do a restart 5 or 6 times.....

Hi all, had the same issue (orange warning that Stop/Start Unavailable with check engine light and DNA did not work) on my 2018 Stelvios. Came on after restarting from a stop light in the morning (after driving about 15 miles). Opening the hood and making sure there wasn't any debris there, then closing it did the trick.

Thanks so much for the suggestion! Saved me a trip to the dealer!

Only question is why would this pop up suddenly? Is it a dirty sensor that doesn't detect the hood is closed? I haven't opened the hood in over 3 months. Just want to make sure I do whatever I can to avoid the issue in the future.

I purchased a SGW bypass module. Hass anyone installed one? Do you really have to remove several items to access the connectors? The instructions state that they don't recommend leaving the bypass in place during normal operation of the vehicle. True?

Input would be appreciated.

depends. if you have two elbows arm disability with eyes on finger ends then most likely you'll be fine.

otherwise at least you'll have to remove footwell cover under dash, knee airbag, then depending on how tight connectors sit you might need to remove lower steering column trim, radio, left small compartment under light switch and a lot of patience and curse words.

yes you can safely leave it connected.

I have a follow up question and problem. A couple weeks ago, I installed the SGW bypass module and harnesses. I was then able to clear my P0440 error code. All was well for a while then the P0440 code came back (Without the gas cap being touched or gasoline added), this of course disabled remote start and auto stop-start. Today went back out to the car and read the codes. It says there are 3 codes.
1. P0440 pending, P0440 in memory, and P0440 Permanent. When I clear all the codes, the first 2 go away and the engine idiot light goes off and remote start works again. BUT, the P0440 Permanent code is still there.

Can someone explain what this is?

Might there be some other evaporative emission system fault other than the gas cap being left off or not clicked tight?

Thanks.

I am still having my error code. It comes back within 24 miles of driving. I am working on my plans to diagnose the error code. One thing I have been trying to find is an affordable gas cap. The 2 style of filler caps I find for sale cost between $75 and $100. Anyone know of an affordable Mopar or aftermarket source where the price isn't jacked up 3X. In the mean time, I inspected the original filler cap and carefully cleaned the sealing surfaces, then applied a thin coat of Vaseline in order to see if if makes a better seal. If/when I get a warmer day later this week, I will do an inspection and troubleshoot the gasoline system and associated parts.

The Vaseline is a good idea. I have also heard of using silicone. Let us know how it works.

I contacted my Closest dealer, in Quebec City. They want $150 Canadian for a gas cap. Absurd. What is it that makes a gas cap unique?

My stop start never works and i put it down to short journeys and low battery voltage usually 12.1 volts.
However after intermittent engine warning and stop start not available with DNA stuck in N mode car felt sluggish decided to get it checked by dealer.
They confirmed the battery is fine and they fully charged it. Has not cured the problem.
At the same time they say fault code shows one of the fuel pumps needs replacing (there are two apparently) and part is on order. What is going on here? Has anyone got an idea please?

Hey guys, I recently got a 2019 Stelvio Sport, 28k miles on the board, still under warranty for 1y or so. I knew Alfa's were faulty, but I took my chances. Not even 2 week in the ownership, the Auto Start/Stop Not Available/Check Engine Light came on one morning, no idea why. I did not even refueled yet or opened the hood, I only drove it for less 100m, probably did a few paddle shifting, but that's it. I looked up a few suggestions and possible causes, like the gas cap, opened hood, etc, but error did not clear. Obviously DNA, remote start, Start/Stop are disabled. Any suggestions? Thank you for you help!

Can you post the OBD error code/s?
Thanks for the quick response. Unfortunately I do not have a OBD error code scanner. I was thinking maybe there is a way to get the code from the car's infotainment menu - no idea if possible. I've also seen people start their car 7-8 times, do a full wheel lock circle left and right, then stop and some of the codes clear, especially after a battery replacement. But since I did not do anything to my car, I doubt any of those ideas will work. If you know a OBD code scanner I could quickly buy, I'm open to suggestions. Thanks again for the help!
